The programme clearly designates responsibility for the different agency departments at different levels as well as for stakeholders. Programming has also been adopted by different industrial operators across bear habitat, as well as individually implemented across municipal governments, personal residences, livestock and crop farms, and beekeeping operations. This programme operates provincially and has been integrated into local initiatives, including the Northwest Grizzly Bear Team which addresses bear recovery efforts in the boreal, as well as activities across the Kananaskis region of Alberta, efforts through Waterton Biosphere Reserve’s Carnivores and Communities Program and the Mountainview BearSmart Society. Bearsmart community designation obtained by committing to a BearSmart plan including implementing the above best practices putting in place prevention management actions and bylaws and an education programme for residents.Community best practices for voluntary participation including best practice for waste management best practice for landfill best practice for control of other attractants best practice for design of green corridors.A household information programme with a focus on the management of rubbish pet food and bird feeders food storage and barbeques gardens, berries and fruit trees. An additional aim was to reduce the economic costs caused by bears, including livestock depredation and property damage. The BearSmart programme was launched in 2008 to help improve public safety (by avoiding bear encounters) and raise awareness of appropriate human behaviour in bear habitat, with a focus on grizzly bears ( Ursus arctos). The solutions most commonly used included bear relocation and destruction of recurring problem bears. In rare cases, bear attacks, including human fatalities have occurred. Bear habituation to humans includes interactions that lead to feeding on residential and campground rubbish, fruiting trees and shrubs, and livestock or crops on farmsteads. In Alberta Canada, increased fragmentation of bear habitat as well as human activities such as petroleum and forestry industry, agriculture and tourism in bear territory have contributed to encounters and conflict incidences.
